The story of ancient Egypt has survived for thousands and thousands of years. Along with mummies, pyramids, tombs and pharaohs, the gods and goddesses of Egypt continue to capture our imaginations, appearing in modern books, films and even video games. But how much do you know about these mythological Egyptian deities?
Overview of the gods and goddesses
It’s supposed the Egyptians worshipped at least 1,500 gods and goddesses in total. They all looked different and controlled different aspects of life.
Some appeared in human form, though most were shown as animals or part animals. Take Anubis, the god of death, mummification and the afterlife, for example; he appeared in the form of a jackal. Sobek, the god of military power, took the shape of a Nile crocodile. Horus, the god of the sky, was depicted either as a falcon or man with a falcon head.
There were kind gods like Bes. He protected homes and was a friend to woman and children; he chased away evil spirits during the times of childbirth and sex. There were also more terrifying gods like Ammit, who was said to devour the souls of those deemed unworthy.
Their influence on popular culture
Though you may not claim to be an expert of Egyptian mythology, you may recognise some of these gods and goddesses from the TV or cinema screen. You may have learned about them from books or even modern video games.
For instance, Vanessa (Eva Green) in the hugely-successful TV drama Penny Dreadful is supposed to be an incarnation of Amunet, the ancient goddess of invisibility and air. You may have bet on the online slot machine Pyramid: Quest for Immortality, which features an Anubis character beside the reels.
