The Best Poker Variants to Play Online

Certain historians hold that Poker’s origins can be traced as far back as the 10th Century in China, while others remain convinced that it’s history began in 16th Century Persia as AsNas. The great card game we enjoy these days is closest in form to Poque, however, a popular European card game from the 17th Century.

Thanks to the birth of online casino technology, we have got hundreds of variations available to us these days. A few clicks of your mouse or finger will reveal where to play slots, what card games are happening and where, and a host of bonuses and promotions to help you along as you enjoy the fun.

Omaha Hold’em

Although it is similar to Texas Hold’em, Omaha Hold’em Poker has few twists, which turn it into a thrilling alternative. One of the main differences is that players get four cards in this game rather than just two. This means that, even though they still use two of their own cards alongside three of the five community cards for their final hands, the chances of landing a bigger run like a flush or a straight are higher. This makes Omaha Hold’em thrilling, tense, and potentially very lucrative.

Pai Gow Poker

Players are set against the dealer in this Poker variant, and each participant receives seven cards that must be arranged, or set, into two hands. The first is a five-card High hand, holding the best cards and highest possible hand, and a two-card Low hand. Stakes are evenly split between them before they’re judged against the dealer’s equivalent. Winnings get paid out at 1:1.

Seven-Card Stud Poker

Seven-Card Stud sees players betting only on the cards they’ve been dealt since there are no community cards. This means there are fewer high hands generally, so there are fewer frayed nerves and better odds as you chase flushes and straights. There is instead a bigger focus on proper odds calculation and aggressive betting early on.

Texas Hold’em

Texas Hold’em is a staple the world over, and most commonly played Poker variation online. Each player gets dealt two cards before several betting rounds as five community cards are revealed one-by-one. Tense, tactical, and requires a good knowledge of game rules and strategy on behalf of the player, this variant requires that you know your game!

Three-Card Poker

Three-Card Poker is thought to derive from Three-Card Brag, a British card game popular in the 16th Century. It’s a great option for quick-thinking players and a wonderful introduction for you if you’re just starting out.

Individual players are set against the dealer in this variation, and place their bets before having their cards dealt facing up. The dealer gets three cards facing down. At this point, players can forfeit their stakes and fold, or place a second bet equal in size to the first and stay in the game. Wins are paid out at 1:1 and the house edge is generally a very reasonable 3% or 4%.
